The Indonesian archipelago's first attempts at coffee cultivation suffered setbacks. The export of Indonesian coffee began in 1711, when it was managed by the Dutch East India Company. In 1860, a Dutch colonial official wrote a novel, Max Havelaar: or the Coffee Auction of the Dutch Trading Company, describing how the colonial system was abused. This book has had a profound impact on Dutch society, enabling the public to understand the coffee trade and the colonial system. Today, Max Havelal has become an established certification in the coffee industry.

Indonesia initially produced only Arabica, but the coffee leaf rust epidemic in 1876 only eradicated many coffee trees. Attempts have been made to replant Liberica varieties, but they are also less immune to leaf rust. So people began to replant Robusta, which is resistant to the disease. Robusta still makes up the vast majority of coffee in Indonesia today.
